Mota Singh was born on April 5, 1889, in the village of Churchak in Punjab. He was part of the earliest influx of immigrants from Punjab through Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay. The passenger log of the S.S. Asia, a Japanese ship that carried many groups of men from Punjab, lists him as "Moti" Singh, arriving on August 17, 1907.

He and two village mates worked in labor crews in central California, and in 1920 he began farming in the Brawley area in partnership with his village mate Harnam Singh.
