Sant Ram Sarda was born in 1888 near Hoshiarpur, Punjab. The family ran a small dairy business and Sant Ram worked as a surveyor. His young wife died in childbirth,

so leaving the son in the care of his family, he came to America. He arrived in San Francisco sometime in 1910-1911, and proceeded to work in the usual laboring jobs open to Punjabis at the time. Around 1915, he opened his own store in Imperial, and operated it until World War I began. Sant Ram registered to serve and while waiting to be called, sold his store. Unfortunately, the war ended.
