TIME TO CHOOSE: A PBS/NPR VOTER'S GUIDE is a special election collaboration November 1, 2000
that joins together PBS's
"The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" and "Frontline," and National Public Radio (NPR) to
examine the critical issues and questions that have surfaced during this Election 2000 campaign.
Simulcast on PBS and NPR, the television/radio/web broadcast (8pm-11pm ET) is a live town hall meeting of citizens participating from studios in three cities and via the internet. "The NewsHour's" Ray Suarez moderates an on-line chat while reporting about it on the broadcast. And NPR's Tom Gjelten, Julie Rovner and John Ydstie contribute background reports comparing candidates' positions on foreign policy, health care, economics and taxes. Anchoring the program in Washington, D.C. is "NewsHour's" Jim Lehrer, who is joined by NPR's Juan Williams ("Talk of the Nation") and political correspondent Elizabeth Arnold, and "NewsHour's" Gwen Ifill, Margaret Warner and Elizabeth Farnsworth. They talk with campaign advisors and political analysts about the major issues and the candidates' leadership qualities. "Frontline" contributes to TIME TO CHOOSE three mini documentaries--"Finding Their Voices," "Confronting Adversity" and "Core Values" which illuminate what has been learned about the candidates during the campaign. NPR's Alex Chadwick contributes segments dubbed "Interviews 50 Cents" which explore how the political views of individual voters intersect with their real lives.
Finally, "NewsHour" correspondents Farnsworth and Ifill and WTTW's Phil
Ponce host three groups of several dozen citizens convened in studios in
Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco enabling lively discussion of the issues and citizen
interaction throughout the three-hour special.
