Wallace for President
George Wallace's political career included four bids for the presidency of the United States. In 1964, 1972, and 1976 he ran as a Democrat, failing three times to receive the party's nomination. In 1968, running as an American Independent, he was popular enough with voters to secure a nomination and enter the national race.
The following maps show the results of the 1964 and 1972 Democratic primaries and the 1968 presidential election. The results for Wallace's 1976 campaign are not included, as his popularity had diminished early in the race.
Democratic Primary (1964)
The Democratic party of 1964 pledged: "[that] peace should be the first concern of all government as it is the prayer of all menÉ; [to] continue all-out efforts through fully enforceable measures to halt and reverse the arms race and bring to an end the era of nuclear terrorÉ; [and to] carry out the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the greatest civil rights measure in the history of the American people."

Democratic Primary (1972)
The Democratic party of 1972 stated: "[W]ar is a waste of human life.... We will end that war by a simple plan that need not be kept secret: The immediate total withdrawal of all Americans from Southeast Asia.... [We are committed to] resuming the march toward equality; to enforcing the laws supporting court decisions and enacting new legal rights as necessary, to assuring every American true opportunity.... [We want to extend the] jurisdiction of the Civil Rights Commission to include denial of civil rights on the basis of sex...."

Presidential Election (1968)
In 1968, Wallace's American Independent Party declared "the Federal Government has adopted so-called 'Civil Rights Acts,' particularly the one adopted in 1964, which have set race against race and class against class, all of which we condemn...." The party also advocated "educational opportunity for all people regardless of race, creed, color, economic or social status..." and believed "communities must be given the right to administer the affairs of their schools as they see fit without fear or threat or reprisal, economic or punitive, from the federal government...."
