The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) has honored FRONTLINE with a 2023 Salute to Excellence Award.

Police on Trial, FRONTLINE’s 2022 documentary in partnership with the Pulitzer Prize-winning staff of the Star Tribune, won the NABJ Award in the “Television – Top 15 Markets: Documentary” category.

Filmed over two years in Minneapolis, the documentary examines one of the most pivotal events in the history of race and policing in America: the murder of George Floyd. Police on Trial draws on unique on-the-ground reporting and filming, from the earliest days after Floyd was killed, to the trial and murder conviction of Derek Chauvin, to the ongoing struggles for police accountability and reform in the city.

The NABJ Award-winning film was written, produced and directed by Mike Shum (American Voices: A Nation in Turmoil), produced by Marcia Robiou (Whose Vote Counts), and reported by Robiou, a team of current and former Star Tribune journalists — including Andy Mannix, Chao Xiong, Jeff Hargarten, Liz Navratil, Liz Sawyer, Libor Jany — and former FRONTLINE Tow Fellow Paula Moura.

The film was produced in association with the Center for Asian American Media and is supported by The WNET Group’s Exploring Hate initiative. Police on Trial was produced as part of FRONTLINE’s Local Journalism Initiative, an innovative effort to support and strengthen investigative reporting in communities around the country, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Announced during NABJ’s annual conference and career fair gala held earlier this month in Birmingham, Alabama, the Salute to Excellence Awards are noted for honoring journalism and communications that best cover the Black experience or address issues affecting the worldwide Black community.

To date, FRONTLINE has received three NABJ Awards. Last year, NABJ recognized FRONTLINE’s 2021 multi-platform project Un(re)solved and “Poisoned,” an investigative series from the Tampa Bay Times in collaboration with FRONTLINE’s Local Journalism Initiative with Salute to Excellence Awards.
