THU., APRIL 23 — The Rise and Fall of Terrorgram, FRONTLINE and ProPublica’s 2025 investigation into how an online network known as Terrorgram spread extremism and violence, was named a 2026 George Foster Peabody Award winner in the News category.
In comments from the Peabody Award jurors, they praised The Rise and Fall of Terrorgram for “uncover[ing] the ‘Terrorgram Collective’ and its strategy of ‘militant accelerationism,’” adding that the film offers “a critical examination of gun violence and political extremism in the digital age.”
From an award-winning team led by reporters A.C. Thompson and James Bandler and acclaimed filmmakers Thomas Jennings and Annie Wong, the award-winning documentary traces the rise of a transnational virtual network of extremists accused of inciting acts of white supremacist terrorism and examines how various loosely-moderated platforms have become havens for extremist ideas and radicalization.
“This was grim and difficult work that took our team around the world over the span of a year,” says Thompson. “I’m happy to be honored — and thank the victims of these crimes for sharing their stories with us.”
“We’re honored to be recognized by the George Foster Peabody Awards for our joint reporting with ProPublica on the rise of violent extremism and online radicalization,” says Raney Aronson-Rath, editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE, which is produced at GBH in Boston. “This award recognizes the power of dogged investigative journalism. Thank you to the Peabody Board of Jurors and our intrepid film team, as well as GBH and PBS for championing our reporting.”
The prestigious George Foster Peabody Awards have honored excellence in broadcasting since 1940. Including this year’s win, FRONTLINE has won 35 Peabody Awards to date. Find the full list of 2026 Peabody Award winners here, and watch The Rise and Fall of Terrorgram below:
