Coming in September on FRONTLINE

From the West African nations of Sierra Leone and Nigeria, to the Chinese enclave of Macau, FRONTLINE’s September lineup spans the globe.

First, in a two-part hour premiering Sept. 9, we’ll explore two of the biggest stories out of Africa in recent months: the largest Ebola outbreak on record, and the fight against Boko Haram — the Islamist militant group that kidnapped nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls in April.

Then, in an investigation set to premiere Sept. 30, veteran correspondent Lowell Bergman will examine how Macau became the gambling capital of the world.

Here’s a closer look at our September lineup:

Sept. 9: Ebola Outbreak & Hunting Boko Haram

From the epicenter of the largest Ebola outbreak on record, FRONTLINE follows health officials tracking the deadly disease and trying to stop its rampant spread. With special access to teams fighting Ebola in Sierra Leone, FRONTLINE’s investigative team delivers an up-close, on-the-ground look at how and why the outbreak is endangering civilians and health-care workers, overwhelming hospitals and getting worse.

Also this hour: In April, the kidnapping of nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram sparked international outrage. Now, amid worldwide pressure to “Bring Back Our Girls,” FRONTLINE investigates accounts that members of the Nigerian military have been committing atrocities in the fight against Boko Haram — uncovering shocking videos showing arrests, torture and summary executions of alleged Boko Haram suspects.

Sept. 30: Bigger Than Vegas

FRONTLINE investigates the explosive growth of Macau as the gambling capital of the world, and how major American casinos conduct business there. Correspondent Lowell Bergman, in collaboration with the Investigative Reporting Program at U.C. Berkeley, shows how hundreds of billions of dollars make their way to Macau’s gaming tables despite China’s currency controls, and how, in some cases, Chinese mobsters are part of the action.
