FRONTLINE Nominated for 13 Emmy Awards

On Thursday, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honored FRONTLINE with 13 News and Documentary Emmy Award nominations.
The recognized projects examine critical domestic and international issues — from investigating aviation titan Boeing’s 737 Max jet to the wide-reaching power of America’s central bank, to how both China and Yemen responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.
FRONTLINE’s 13 nods included two nominations in the prestigious “Best Documentary” category for the 2021 documentaries A Thousand Cuts and American Insurrection.
A Thousand Cuts follows renowned journalist Maria Ressa, CEO of the independent news site Rappler and a top target of then-Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on press freedom. In December 2021, Ressa was named a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The feature-length film was also nominated in the “Outstanding Social Issue Documentary” category.
In partnership with ProPublica and Berkeley Journalism’s Investigative Reporting Program, American Insurrection examines the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol and the threats far-right extremist groups pose to the nation. The investigation was also nominated in the “Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary” category.
Also acknowledged by the NATAS was Un(re)solved — FRONTLINE’s 2021 multiplatform interactive in partnership with Ado Ato Pictures, StoryCorps, Black Public Media, and Northeastern University’s Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project — which examines a federal effort to grapple with America’s legacy of racist killings. The project was nominated in the “Outstanding Interactive Media: Innovation” category.
Additionally, three of the series’ 13 nominations spotlighted documentaries produced in partnership with other national newsrooms, including The New York Times (Boeing’s Fatal Flaw), NPR (The Healthcare Divide) and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (Pandora Papers).
“We are so pleased to see the breadth of FRONTLINE’s documentary storytelling recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences — from our collaborative investigations to our digital interactive experiences,” says FRONTLINE Executive Producer and Editor-in-Chief Raney Aronson-Rath. “We share this great news with our editorial partners, as well as with our colleagues in public media, and remain ever grateful to PBS, CPB and GBH for their support of our work and mission.”
In total, PBS was honored with 30 nominations, including five nominations for Nature and four nominations each for Independent Lens and projects affiliated with POV. Read a full list of this year’s nominees here.
