Tree Ring Science

Yes. While many factors contribute to the size of a tree ring, large rings usually indicate a rainy season (and thin rings often indicate drier seasons). By matching tree rings of known years to rainfall records, scientists can figure out how much rain each size ring represents. Depending on where the tree is, scientists can "see" El Niño in trees that exhibit signs of much rainier or much drier seasons than normal.
