Sandburg was not only a poet but also a noted collector and performer of American folk music.

The American Songbag was published in 1927. It includes the words and music to over 280 American tradionals, some of which have been covered by the likes of Johnny Cash (“Careless Love” with Bob Dylan), The Beach Boys (“The John B. Sails” aka “Sloop John B”), and Arthur Russell (“I Ride An Old Paint” aka “Goodbye Old Paint”). See images from its original printing.
