Take the Peace Corp into the Information Age and what do you get? The Geekcorp.
After making his millions at the height of the dot.com boom, Ethan Zuckerman decided to
put his plastic pen protector to use for humankind. Looking back on the year he spent
in Ghana as a Fulbright scholar, Ethan envisioned a program where geeks like him
could start to build bridges across the ever-growing global, digital divide.
The Geekcorp mission is simple: Volunteers spend four months on-site in developing countries.
With the support of in-country staff, each Geek spends their working hours helping a local
business develop and utilize new technologies. They spend their free time exploring their
host country and meeting its people, which in Ghana's case are considered some of the
friendliest on the globe.
