Energy and the Environment

President Bush Signs Yucca Mountain Legislation
Update: President Bush signed a resolution today making Yucca Mountain-- some 90 miles from Las Vegas-- the nation's main nuclear waste repository.

The president's resolution overrides Nevada's veto of the Bush administration's plan, which received final congressional approval earlier this month.

Nevada officials have five federal lawsuits still pending against the project. The Energy Department, which has long supported the plan, must first obtain a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a process that could take several years. (7/23/02)
