Passing Impressions of the American Road
Autolandscape, Utah, 1971
Elaine Mayes received a National Endowment of the Arts grant to document the American landscape as she traveled from San Francisco to Massachusetts. She took the photos from her moving car and snapped a photo every time the scenery changed.
Mayes, along with Steve Fitch and Robbert Flick, are featured photographers in "Landscapes in Passing," a photography exhibit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
