U.S., Southeast Asian Nations Vow to Combat Terrorism

Update: In a move aimed at bolstering efforts to combat international terrorism, the United States and a bloc of Southeast Asian nations signed a major treaty Thursday aimed at improving intelligence sharing and police cooperation.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed the accord along with representatives of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations [ASEAN], including officials from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. (8/1/02)

U.S. Charges Abu Sayyaf Members in Missionary's Death
Update: The Justice Department on Tuesday announced an indictment against five alleged leaders of the militant group Abu Sayyaf in the rash of kidnappings that led to the death of an American missionary. (7/23/02)

U.S. Army Helicopter Down After Exercise in Philippines
Update: Rescuers recover three bodies from the sea after a U.S. Army helicopter crash off the coast of the Philippines. There are no known survivors of the eight crew members and two Air Force para-rescue jumpers. (2/22/02)
Update: The MH-47E Chinook helicopter went down while taking part in anti-terrorism training exercises in the Philippines. (2/21/02)

Philippines MapUpdate: Filipino troops killed at least five Islamic militants today, one day after beginning training exercises with the United States to wipe out the Abu Sayyaf guerrilla organization. (2/1/02)
