On Contemporary Russian Film-Making
Throughout
this century, film-making has come to exert great influence on
historical and cultural trends. The Soviet government used film
as a medium to impose its ideologies on its people and to shape
Soviet culture as the State saw fit. Although the themes and ideological
undertones of their work were determined largely by the State,
the artists were often able to convey their own ideas and creativity
while conforming to the guidelines of the censors. The result
was a genre of films that is unique and fascinating both artistically
and historically. TRAC plans to invite major figures in Russian
and American film to explore the current status of Russian film-making
and to address its future as an art and as a factor in the reform
process.
