Mother's Day I’ll spend a good part of Mother’s Day, as I have each year since I became a mom, silently thinking about another mother, a woman I met once but whom I think about daily -- my child’s birthmother. My thoughts of her are not what you’d expect, given the media’s treatment of adoption in recent years. I do not spend time worrying that she’ll use some obscure legal loophole to challenge us in court. I am not fearful that I’ll find her stalking us, silently watching us raise the child she carried. I do not find myself resentful of the role she played in the life of my child, a role I can never play. And so, this Mother's Day, I will celebrate my motherhood and hold my child's birthmother close in my thoughts - as always and without fear.
