December: Waiting for Winter

C.B. embraces a warmer winter
by Kip Anderson

The weather really sold us out,
Pretending fever when a cold
Was all it ever held in store,
Assigning us the status quo
Of never knowing what was up.

As far as global warming goes,
I'll settle for a smaller crop
Of snow to shovel. I embrace
A season unperturbed by mass
Hysteria, for I recall
The Pennsylvania blizzards in
The fifties lasting several days
That made our town a testament
To arguments between Yahweh
And Nature.

I was just a kid
Then, well equipped with gloves and boots,
And standing ready with my sled.

But now that I've put on some years
(And pounds, gray hair, and aches perhaps)
I take no pleasure in the cold.

Well, C.B., why don't you tell us how you really feel? Would you like to go to Florida, or isn't that far enough south for you? While you're still here, maybe you can help me bring in the leeks and the kale before they freeze in the ground—and some dry firewood while you're at it. As for me, I'm just happy to be able to take a little break from gardening. A long break, maybe. We'll see.

Kip Anderson has been the Victory Garden's head gardener for over 20 years.
