Observational activity
Make arrangements to observe preschool children with disabilities, either in children's centers with children who are not disabled or in programs only for children with special needs. Make note of how the disabled children are interacting socially with other children with special needs or with those who are not disabled. Children with any type or degree of disability can be included. Also make note of the activities that the children with special needs were able to participate in and also those they were not able to enjoy because of the disability.

For each child observed, write up a brief report with the child's name and age, type of program, other children in the class and summary of your observations. For each child, answer the following questions:

1. What could you do to help this child interact with the other children in the class? How could you help the other children understand this child's disability and include her in their play?
2. What changes in the activities and environment would you make to help this child to participate more freely?
3. What new activities would you introduce to this child to help her acquire the skills she needs or pursue an interest?

Activities for the classroom
The teacher of a 4-year-old class next door to your room is about to welcome a child who wears a hearing aid and uses sign language to communicate. During a staff meeting, she brushes aside the concerns expressed about possible problems this might produce by telling everyone that, "After all, this kid is just like everyone else. I bet the children don't notice any difference. We'll treat him just the same way."

What are the pros and cons of this approach? What advice would you give this teacher about the effective ways to integrate that youngster into the class?
