where can I get some of the songs that were in the documentary on PBS (Ameican Masters)(Leaning to live with myself), I have almost every CD I can find of Merle but heard the following songs for the first time on the show, and will he ever put out a CD with other songs from the past that maybe were not “hits”?
1.) ” In my house of memories”
2.) “Love is always pretty when its new (you)”
3.) “I keep running from life (I can’t get away)”
    4.) “I’ve done it all”
5.) “We’ll have roses in the winter”
6.) “Leaning to live with myself”
    7.) “I am what I am”

the man sings with a haunting cry in his voice, a hurt in his heart, and leaves you with the feeling that you find had to describe but you have a kinship with him every time you hear him. I have seen him (at the now defunct) “Saddle-rack” in San Jose many years ago and have followed his music for many many years,
He is THE greatest country singer-song writer, surpassing Hank Williams and Willie Nelson.

This documentory is a masterpiece. I’m sure alotta folks after seeing it,
“” Started Loving Him Again Today “”

I will be 60 years old this coming Sunday, and have been a HUGE fan of Merle Haggard since I was in my early 20’s. (My Mom loved him and his music and so do I). I have numerous LP albums, cassette tapes and CDs including his boxed set “Merle Haggard “down every road”. I have been to several of his concerts over the years, and will be going to see him perform again this coming November. I love it that he writes his own music, and his songs reflect on his life. He is so awsome! My hubby is a musician also, and loved to sing some of Merle’s songs when he performed. I absolutely LOVED this documentary on his life! It was wonderful! I hope a DVD of “Merle Haggard: Learning to Live With Myself” will be available to purchase soon. I will be one of the first to get it, and know I will watch it over and over again! Thanks for making such a great documentary on such a great musician, singer, songwriter as Merle!!!

I have been fortunate enough to see Merle several times in concert in recent years, including front row only a few weeks after his cancer surgery.
The man is unstoppable. A musical Force of Nature.

    There have been PREtenders
    There have been CONtenders
But there is only one Hag.

One of the true national treasures…long may he run.

    My childhood Hero

  • john

this is beautiful. thnak you PBS.

  • john

this was beautiful. thank you PBS.

  • john

his life is pretty much the history of rural america in the 20th century. it is both up lifting and heart breaking.
the kennedy center awards are FINALLY coming around as well; correcting the situation mr. was spoke of in the deleted scenes.

  • Josep (Barcelona,Spain)

    It’s my favourite.
I discovered it 8 years ago, because in Spain it’s too dificult to know and follow some country musiciens, due to the comercial circuit, here, till now, only appears in radios Gatr Brooks, Shanya Twain etc, etc… but no the greats ones like Shaver, Haggard, Gauthier, etc…
My wish will be to see merle playing in Catalonia, and enjoy this music in our country, where the Country Music every day is more know.

  • patrick evans

i got to see Merle for the first time when i was six years old. He jumped on stage with fiddle in hand, running across the stage with this overwhelming energy. That was the BEST concert i have ever been to.America really needs to tip their hats off to the Hag. Without his music i don’t know where country music or I would be today. Thanks Merle for all the wonderful music, memories and the heart felt lessons your music has taught all of us!
