This piece on the blue-ringed octopus is fascinating. However, I am trying to contact Dr. Norman. "Kings of Camouflage" aired on NOVA on PBS last week and I was particularly intrigued by the so-called ability of the cuttlefish Sepia lutimanus to 'hypnotize' its prey. I have a hypothesis that S. lutimanus is not 'hypnotizing' its prey at all, but is issuing a blast of either electricity (a la the electric eel) or some kind of sonar to effectively paralyze or otherwise immobilize its prey, and the flashing physical display the cuttlefish produces is simply an adjunct of its sonic or electric powers. I know of no means that an animal such as a crab, with a simple nervous system, could be 'hypnotized.' But they could certainly be immobilized by a sonic or electrical blast. I would be very eager to have your thoughts on this. Thank you!
