The species of yellowjacket wasp shown in this episode is the western yellowjacket (scientific name: Vespula pensylvanica). Its native range is the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The dramatic spread of this species in Hawaii in the late 1970s coincided with the use of refrigerated containers to import fresh-cut Christmas trees to Hawaii from Oregon and Washington.
