I watched the episode again; then read these articles. With each viewing, I learn something new, or feel something more. But I'm always heartbroken. These specialists, and programs, give me hope. Yes, the gene pools of each endangered or extinct speciew may be limited. But I look at it this way--those 18 little ferrets for example-the species is coming back to life with the genes of the toughest, the bravest, obviously the smartest, with an incredible will to survive. The best-and they have some help-in the form of the experts, the programs, the centers, and the money it takes to run them.
I need to believe that it's not over for all the creatures profiled in this show-and all the other endangered species. Not yet.
I believe that those two turtles, if given more chances, will succeed in saving their species. Give them time to do what nature intended them to do. For their first try, I thought it was amazing. Yes, some eggs that survived would have wonderous, right out of the gate. How about more romance, and less chemistry? I like to think thy will pull it off-and the next generation of turtles will enter the world.
One last thing--and I love the narration. But the center, zoos, programs, etc don't "produce" more animals. The animals produce more of their species. I thank all of these amazing places for giving them a safe, healthy, and caring environment for which to do it in. For all their hard work, we have to believe. There has to be more than a broken heart.

I saw The Loneliest Animals on "Nature" and read these articles: the more I learn, the more heartbroken I become, even as I commend the efforts and sacrifices of those who are taking action to help save these near-extinct creatures and their habitats....

I read this article to learn more about the ratetus turtle but didn't find anything. Is the one mentioned in the beginning of your article still living and if so, has anything successful be done to carry on his lineage?
