Colleen is spot on. The word “Catholic” has a very specific meaning, and these Sisters have hijacked the Catholic label to promote values and lifestyles that are totally contrary to the Catholic Faith. They must be given credit for the good things they have done to implement some aspects of the Social Doctrine of the Church, but their failure to speak out against the fundamental injustice of abortion cannot be excused and must be corrected.
I’m really confused here–so WHEN did LCWR ever make any statement in conflict with the Church’s official teaching on abortion or marriage? And the statements it made on women’s ordination were given BEFORE the Vatican’s prohibition of any discussion on women’s ordination. I don’t recall the male counterpart to LCWR ever taking a publc stand on abortion and traditional marriage, so why doesn’t the Vatican go after them? Nor has the more traditional parallel organization for conservative sisters. Something else is going on here and I’m not sure what it is. It seems like a scapegoating of the nuns in the wake of so many scandals involving churchmen.
