Update #5
Big Government, Big Problems
The massive bureaucratic machine of the United States Government will
collapse when all its computer systems fall to the Y2K bug.
Since
it includes so many agencies and services, many people were worried about
the federal government's preparedness for Y2K. However, the government
spent billions of dollars checking systems and preparing for potential
problems. Even then, most agencies were still only cautiously optimistic.
Overall, only minor problems hampered federal services after New Year's
Day. A glitch in the Medicare payment system delayed payments from a Chicago
bank to several hospitals in eight states. However, other payments, including
Social Security, continued without delay.
The biggest story was probably the temporary failure of several spy satellites
used by the Pentagon. During the few hours it took to fix the problem,
the Pentagon kept it all a secret. They thought it unwise to alert everybody
that the cameras were off.
