What is “Patience” About
Patience Evans has always been a bit different. She views the world in a unique way because she has a special gift — she is autistic. But her life is on the verge of changing forever.
Patience works in the Police Criminal Records Office where she crosses paths with Detective Inspector Bea Metcalf. Bea quickly notices that Patience makes connections in cases that other people don’t. Bea wants Patience on her team, not realizing that a change in routine could be destabilizing for Patience.
Over the first season, Bea learns more about Patience’s traumatic upbringing and how autism affects her life. The two women form an unlikely friendship and a formidable partnership as they work together to uncover the truth behind a string of mysterious cases.
In Season 2, Patience is back tackling more puzzling crimes across York, England. When new detective Frankie Monroe bursts onto the scene, their differences spark tension — but they must learn to work as a team.
As they investigate crime across the city, Patience brings her unique insight to the cases which include a killer in the Minster, a murder of a monk in a monastery, and a railway mystery.
Off duty, Patience continues searching for her mother, with unexpected results. And her budding relationship with SOCO Elliot Scott brings her both joy and challenges.
Adapted from the critically acclaimed French television series, “Astrid.”

Meet the New & Returning Cast Members
Patience Evans
Patience Evans (played by Ella Maisy Purvis, “A Kind of Spark”) works in the Police Criminal Records Office in York. As an autistic individual, Patience appreciates a lifestyle suited around structure and routine. When she’s not working, she finds comfort in listening to classical music and tending to her pets.
However, there’s nothing Patience finds more tempting than solving a good puzzle. When her knack for identifying patterns in investigative cases is recognized, Patience is drawn into the chaotic world of procedural police work.
Detective Inspector Bea Metcalf invites Patience to work with her team, and by the end of Season 1, the two women form an unlikely friendship and a formidable partnership.
In Season 2, Patience navigates the arrival of new Detective Inspector Frankie Monroe and her straightforward personality following Bea’s unexpected departure. All while her determination and quiet brilliance continue to uncover clues that others miss. Time will tell if Patience’s highly perceptive approach is enough to earn Frankie's respect.
Off duty, Patience continues to search for her mother, struggles in a budding relationship with SOCO Elliot Scott, and gradually comes to terms with love, loss, and her identity.
The 23-year-old actress Ella Maisy Purvis returns in the leading role as a neurodivergent character she is proud to portray on screen, a part that resonates as she is also on the autism spectrum herself.
Patience is based on the character Astrid (played by Sara Mortensen) in the show “Astrid.”
DI Bea Metcalf
Previously leading the division was Detective Inspector Bea Metcalf (played by Laura Fraser). Bea was a devoted, seasoned police officer who poured all of her effort into her work. However, with the demands that come from her job, Bea sometimes struggled to balance her family life with work responsibilities. Nevertheless, she remained devoted to her young son, Alfie, who frequently had a hard time at school.
Unlike many of her colleagues, DI Metcalf recognized the brilliance and uniqueness in Patience. When she discovered Patience’s ability to make connections in cases that other people didn’t, Bea was eager to recruit the young woman, and together, the odd-couple made a formidable, crime-solving team.
We learn that Bea has found a new school for Alfie and, much to Patience’s dismay, takes a job in Glasgow, meaning she does not return in Season 2.
Bea is based on the character Raphaëlle Coste (played by Lola Dewaere) in the show “Astrid.”
DI Frankie Monroe
Detective Inspector Frankie Monroe (played by Jessica Hynes, “The Royle Family”) arrives in York a week early to take on her new role leading the crime division. DI Monroe is a sharp police officer, who cuts to the chase and sets high standards for those around her. With her abrasive personality and forceful tactics, Frankie disrupts the existing dynamic, immediately clashing with her team over their different approaches.
Sceptical of Patience’s unique perception, Frankie initially ruffles feathers when she dismisses Patience and her involvement in police work. Tension and disagreement between the pair evolve throughout the season as Frankie gradually begins to recognize the value of Patience’s pattern recognition and investigative instincts.
Meanwhile, as the unit pieces together crimes across the city, Frankie’s past resurfaces, forcing her to confront her own history while finding resolution within her team.
DS Jake Hunter, DC Will Akbari, and DCI Calvin Baxter
A dedicated and respected member of the investigative team, DS Jake Hunter (played by Nathan Welsh) brings structure and professionalism to a series of increasingly complex cases. Though methodical in his approach to investigations and initially skeptical of bringing Patience onto the team, Jake recognizes the value of Patience’s unique way of thinking and quickly becomes her staunchest advocate.
With his loyalty and calm authority, Jake often serves as a bridge between Patience and DI Monroe, helping smooth tensions and keep the team focused when personalities clash. Jake is quietly compassionate, supporting Patience as she navigates both personal and professional obstacles, while also encouraging others in the department to learn more about her perspective.
Supporting Jake is DC Will Akbari (played by Ali Ariaie), a tech-savvy officer with a talent for following trails and uncovering crucial details that contribute to active investigations.
The team is overseen by Detective Chief Inspector Calvin Baxter (played by Mark Benton), whose seasoned leadership provides stability and structure, especially when unexpected developments shake the department.
Together, they navigate crime across the city of York, combining their strengths to bring difficult cases to a close.
Jake is based on the character Nicolas (played by Benoit Michel) in the show “Astrid.”
Billy Thompson
Billy Thompson (played by Connor Curren) is the leader of York’s support group for autistic adults. Personable and thoughtful, Billy provides encouragement and advice to the group’s members, including Patience. Billy is always willing to lend a helping hand to Patience when she needs assistance solving her cases.
Billy is based on the character William (played by Jean-Benoît Souilh) in the show “Astrid.”
Douglas Gilmor
Douglas Gilmor (played by Adrian Rawlins, “Harry Potter”) is a retired DCI and godfather to Patience. Having known Patience her entire life, Douglas is naturally protective of her. He encourages Patience to embrace her talent for solving puzzles and supports her as she navigates police work, personal relationships, and the mystery surrounding her mother. Gentle guidance from Douglas provides Patience with reassurance and steady support as her life grows increasingly more complex.
Douglas is based on the character Alain (played by Geoffroy Thiebaut) in the show “Astrid.”
Elliot Scott
Elliot Scott (played by Tom Lewis, “Redeeming Love”) is a SOCO — Scene of Crime Officer — on the forensics team who frequently crosses paths with Patience. As last season ended, Patience was distracted by work and confused about her feelings for Elliot. Now we find the two in a budding relationship, navigating the ups and downs of new love.
Elliot is initially oblivious of the routines and preferences that help Patience feel comfortable, and he doesn’t always pick up on the nuances that can leave her feeling bewildered. As a result, they find themselves on rocky ground as Elliot makes an effort to better understand her particular needs.
Their relationship develops as they learn how to communicate more effectively, with Elliot offering Patience both emotional support and occasional conflicts that overlap with her work. Elliot assists Patience in tracing her mother while becoming a grounding presence as her personal life unfolds.
