Eric Lander has been one of the principal leaders of the Human Genome Project and serves as director of the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research, the largest federally funded center for genome mapping and sequencing. Lander, who is also a professor of biology at M.I.T., has won many honors and awards including the MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship, the Baker Memorial Award for Undergraduate Teaching at MIT, and the Woodrow Wilson Prize from Princeton University. He was a Rhodes scholar and received his DPhil in mathematics from Oxford University in 1981.
