In December 1914, the Director of Military Operation in London wrote to the General Officer Commanding in Egypt, "I am sending you out this week - a youngster, 2nd Lt. Lawrence who has wandered about in the Sinai Peninsula, and who came in here to help in the map branch".
Thus it was that T.E. Lawrence was sent to Egypt to work for military intelligence on Arab matters.
He loved his work from the start. In a letter home he said that his job was "far and away the best job going in Egypt these few weeks. The people at the Pyramids or on the Canal have had a very dull time."

Lawrence's fluent Arabic and first-hand knowledge of the Sinai, as a result of his archaeological and mapping experience, made him a natural choice to be posted to Cairo.
