President Obama Takes Chevy Volt Electric Car for a Test Drive

It might go down as the shortest joyride in history.

President Obama got behind the wheel of a black Chevrolet Volt, GM’s new electric car, and drove it a distance of about 10 feet, topping out at at a few miles per hour.

Mr. Obama was invited to test drive the battery-powered car while touring a General Motors plant outside Detroit Friday.

He buckled himself in only after consulting with Secret Service and top aides, including White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who remarked, “I hope it has an airbag.”

Upon exiting the vehicle, the president deemed the ride “pretty smooth.”

Mr. Obama also visited a nearby Chrysler plant earlier in the day, but did not take any vehicles out for a spin. The president was in Michigan to tout the progress made in the U.S. auto industry since last year, when the federal government pumped $60 billion into GM and Chrysler and forced both companies into bankruptcy.

On Friday’s NewsHour, we’ll have a closer look at the state of the U.S. auto industry and manufacturing.
