Jimmy Carter’s leadership as president was “far-sighted” and put aside short-term political gain on issues like climate change and human rights, according to remarks prepared by his vice president, Walter Mondale, and read at his funeral by Ted Mondale on Thursday. “He put aside his short-term political interests to tackle challenges that demanded sacrifice, to protect our kids and grandkids from future harm,” Ted Mondale said, reading from his father’s tribute. Mondale wrote that this action paved the way for future presidents to deal with climate change despite skepticism from his contemporaries. “Some thought he was crazy to fight so hard to pass these laws. But he was dead right,” Ted Mondale read. Ted Mondale said Carter also “elevated” human rights on the agenda of presidents, in particular the rights of women. He noted that Carter appointed women to critical positions in the executive branch and nominated five times the number of women to the federal judiciary as all his predecessors combined.
