WATCH: Democrats take control of the House as new Congress convenes

Democrats will officially take control of the House today after winning a majority of the chamber’s seats in November’s midterm election.

The House will convene at noon today. Watch the event in the player above.

After a scheduled prayer and pledge, a final vote for House speaker, which Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California is heavily favored to win, will be held. Incoming House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., will deliver remarks, followed by Pelosi, if she wins as speaker.

The new 116th Congress will begin as the partial government shutdown enters its 13th day. Later Thursday, House Democrats will vote on a series of bills aimed to reopen the government, though the legislation is unlikely to make it through the Senate or the White House.
