WATCH: House panel examines Delaney Hall ICE detention center conditions and protests

The House Judiciary Oversight Subcommittee held a hearing Wednesday about the conditions at the Delaney Hall ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey.

The subcommittee said the hearing would explore "how recent protests at Delaney Hall have disrupted ICE's immigration enforcement efforts."

Since late May, law enforcement has clashed outside the center with protestors who say they are demonstrating in solidarity with the detainees who have alleged poor living conditions.

President Donald Trump defended operations at Delaney Hall when asked during a May 27 Cabinet meeting and called the protestors "fake" and "paid for."

Detainees went on a hunger strike in May, according to the immigrant advocacy group Cosecha.

They said in handwritten letters that they're given expired food — some containing maggots — and stay in overcrowded cells without air conditioning. Some say they're being denied medication.

Several Democratic lawmakers have visited the facility and confirmed these accounts. Multiple House members confronted Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin last month during a budget hearing about the facility and reports of neglect.

Former ICE New York field office deputy director Scott Mechowski, the Federation for American Immigration Reform's border security adviser Art Del Cueto, Center for Immigration Studies law and policy fellow Andrew Arthur and ACLU of New Jersey executive director Amol Sinha testified.
