WATCH: State Department says Brazil has ‘full support’ following riots

State Department Spokesman Ned Price said Brazil’s democratic institutions have the United States’ full support.

The statement comes after supporters of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro stormed and trashed the nation’s Congress, the Supreme Court and presidential palace Sunday.

Many have said they want the Brazilian army to restore the far-right Bolsonaro to power and oust the newly inaugurated leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In the meantime, Brazil’s former leader Bolsonaro has been in Central Florida.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said it received a request from the Secret Service to provide a police escort for Bolsonaro when he arrived and he was still a sitting president, he has not been surrounded by a noticeable phalanx of security.

Bolsonaro has also reportedly been hospitalized with abdominal pain. His wife, Michelle, said on social media that he had been hospitalized for observation due to abdominal discomfort related to a 2018 stabbing that has led to multiple hospitalizations in the past.

When asked if the U.S. would send Bolsonaro back to Brazil, the State Department said the Biden administration hadn’t received any requests from Brazil related to the former president.

Price also spoke about how Iran may be ‘contributing‘ to war crimes in Ukraine.

The Biden administration said Monday that Iran’s sale of lethal drones to Russia for use in its ongoing invasion of Ukraine means the country may be “contributing to widespread war crimes.”

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan leveled the charge against Iran on Monday as he spoke to reporters accompanying President Joe Biden on a trip to Mexico.

While it did not signal a policy shift, the charge marked some of the sharpest U.S. rhetoric against Iran since it began providing weapons to Russia to support its nearly year-long war in Ukraine.

It comes as the U.S. and European partners are looking to further ostracize both nations in the court of public opinion, as they face challenges with physically stopping the transfers of weapons on which Russia is increasingly reliant.
