Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz said Friday that a previously classified and controversial GOP memo on the Russia probe, which Republicans say shows that the FBI abused its surveillance powers during its investigation, should “cause all American citizens to be outraged, regardless of political affiliation.”
“This is a wanton miscarriage of justice, and the stuff of tin-pot dictatorships,” he said Friday at a news conference.

Gaetz has been one of the most vocal members of Congress pushing the House Intelligence Committee to release a previously classified memo on the Russia investigation.
The committee, chaired by Rep. Devin Nunes, released the memo Friday, though the FBI and Justice Department earlier this week strongly disputed its accuracy. President Donald Trump declassified the document, paving the way for its release, earlier Friday.
Democrats have criticized the memo as an attempt to mislead the public on the Russia investigation. House Intelligence Committee Democrats prepared their own version of the memo earlier this week. They have not yet released it. But they issued a statement Friday saying that “to publicly release misleading allegations against the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation is a shameful effort to discredit these institutions, undermine the Special Counsel’s ongoing investigation, and undercut congressional probes.”
Nunes, in his own statement, said “the Committee has discovered serious violations of the public trust, and the American people have a right to know when officials in crucial institutions are abusing their authority for political purposes. Our intelligence and law enforcement agencies exist to defend the American people, not to be exploited to target one group on behalf of another. It is my hope that the Committee’s actions will shine a light on this alarming series of events so we can make reforms that allow the American people to have full faith and confidence in their governing institutions.”
