PBS NewsHour Special Correspondent Jane Ferguson Named Recipient of a 2022 Gracie Award

Arlington, VA (April 13, 2022)—The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation today announced that PBS NewsHour special correspondent, Jane Ferguson, is the recipient of a 2022 Gracie Award in the Reporter/Correspondent (TV National) category for her reporting in Afghanistan last year. Fergusons’ August 2021 winning report was shot outside of the Kabul Airport, where she was the only U.S. broadcaster reporting on the ground there at the time, as thousands desperately tried to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover of the country earlier that month.

With support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Ferguson and the NewsHour team traveled to Afghanistan four times in 2021 to cover the complicated challenges of leaving America’s longest ever war, the Taliban’s takeover, and the humanitarian consequences of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. NewsHour’s coverage of Afghanistan displayed a relentless dedication to the story of what was happening in the country and a consistent focus on the human impact of the crisis there.

“Jane Ferguson is one of the toughest foreign correspondents in the business,” said NewsHour’s senior executive producer Sara Just. “And she balances that with deep empathy for the people she is covering. She sees their needs, their struggles and brings them forward for all of us to understand.”

NewsHour’s senior foreign affairs editor Morgan Till added, “Every time I think Jane has done her best work, she surpasses herself. She is an exceptional reporter, and an even better person. We are so proud to have worked with her these many years, and both the toughness, and steel of her big heart shine through in all of her work.”

This year’s Gracie Awards will be presented at the annual Gracies Gala in Los Angeles on Tuesday, May 24.
