The 1970s saw the fastest subsidence rates along the coast. An oil and gas extraction boom in the Terrebonne Basin during the late 1960s and 1970s coincide with wetland loss in the area. A majority of the land loss occurred during that time as oil and gas drilling shifted sediment and channels for transport cut through marshlands.
