While many factors cause wetland loss, oil and gas extraction, new canals, channels, and levee placement all contributed to the land loss visible by the 1990s. Loss of wetlands and natural protective barriers make islands like Isle de Jean Charles more susceptible to damage from storms, like Hurricane Andrew which blew through the coast less than a year before this photo was taken.
