The 1990s was a period of relative stability for the Gulf Coast. Brady Couvillion of the USGS National Wetlands Research Center said that while the coast still experienced land loss and erosion, coastal use permits were harder to obtain in the 1990s. That meant that fewer new channels, canals, and development occurred during the 1990s than the 1950s through the 1970s.
