FDA releases plan to make cigarettes less addictive, but its fate rests with Trump

Federal officials on Wednesday released a far-reaching proposal to make cigarettes less addictive by capping their nicotine content, a goal long sought by antismoking advocates that is unlikely to go into effect anytime soon.

France to ban smoking on beaches as it seeks to avoid 75,000 tobacco-related deaths per year

The measures are part of a national anti-tobacco plan presented by the health minister, who says tobacco products cause 75,000 avoidable deaths a year in France.

U.S. adult cigarette smoking hits new all-time low

Cigarette smoking dropped to another new all-time low last year, with 1 in 9 adults saying they were current smokers. Meanwhile, e-cigarette use rose, to about 1 in 17 adults.

New Zealand passes lifetime ban on youth buying cigarettes

New Zealand has passed into law a unique plan to phase out tobacco smoking by imposing a lifetime ban on young people buying cigarettes.

FDA issues plan to ban menthol flavor in cigarettes, cigars

Menthol is the only cigarette flavor that was not banned under the 2009 law that gave the FDA authority over tobacco products. The Biden administration has been under pressure from African American groups and health advocates to eliminate the flavor.
