Fifty U.S. Marines left for Haiti on Monday to protect the American Embassy and diplomats as armed rebels overran the country's second-largest city, Cap-Haitien, and threatened to attack the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Haitian police this week were able to reclaim two of 11 towns taken over by armed rebels in protests that have been broiling over the past five days aimed at ousting President Jean-Bertrand Aristide from office.
