Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano named former federal prosecutor Alan Bersin as the next "border czar" to lead U.S. Customs and Border Protection during a Wednesday news conference in El Paso, Texas.

In Wednesday's other news, the House approved a $400 billion spending bill for the current fiscal year and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the government will miss a 2012 deadline for screening freight for radiological and nuclear material.

Militants attacked the U.S. embassy in Yemen Wednesday, assaulting the structure with automatic weapons, rocket-propelled grenades and at least one suicide car bomb. Officials said the attack killed at least 16 people, including six assailants.
