Bunch is stepping down from the leadership of the Smithsonian Institution following a tumultuous year in which President Donald Trump tried to remake the portrayal of U.S. history by the Smithsonian museums and other cultural entities.

Lonnie Bunch to become the first African American to lead the Smithsonian Institution

Bunch, who was the first director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, will become the Smithsonian Institution's 14th secretary.
