“There is a tremendous need for support from the international community to rebuild,” Aoun said. He proposed economic aid be parceled out to specific geographical zones so individual countries can aid a certain area.
Aoun asked for international assistance is helping alleviate the burden from Syrian refugees in his country, saying the population has surged by a third.
“The number of displaced persons amounts to one third of Lebanon’s population,” Aoun said. “The displacement has exacerbated the economic social health and humanitarian problems of the host community. Lebanon demands intensified endeavors for the safe and dignified return of the displaced persons without linking it to a political solution in Syria.”
Aoun also reiterated his country’s support of UN Resolution 1701, which was intended to resolve the 2006 Lebanon war. He asked that Israel, in particular avoid violating its airspace to attack neighboring countries.
