A parent gives a high five to two children.

Donkey Hodie enjoys spending time with her Grampy. One way they celebrate being a family is by reminding one another, “We are a hee-hawesome team!”

When a family member needs extra care, the rest of the family can become a helping team to support them. Each member of the team has their own special way of caring for others, and when everyone works together towards the same goal, the team becomes stronger.

Celebrate your family care team by creating a poster, flag, banner, or t-shirt together.

1

Pick a Team Name

Begin by sharing suggestions for a family care team name.

Get started with these ideas:

  • Think of something special to you or your family; it could be a place, a family tradition, a phrase your family says often, or a song.
  • What do you love to do together?
  • What makes your family special or unique?
  • Do you have a favorite animal or color preference?
2

Plan Your Design

After you’ve chosen a name, think of fun ideas for a design. What shapes, colors, objects, animals, or other things would you like to include? You could also add encouraging words or phrases like: My family is a team – we help each other!

Tip: Sketch a simple draft of your design in pencil on scrap paper so everyone on the team can share ideas before starting the final version.

3

Draw Your Design

Work together to bring your design to life! For a poster, flag or banner, take turns drawing different parts of the design. For T-shirts, each member can draw the design on their own shirt and add their own special touches.

4

Celebrate Your Work!

Pick a special place at home to display your family team artwork or have fun wearing your unique shirts.

During this activity, talk about ways to work together as a family. Here are some suggestions:

  • Some children might enjoy hearing stories about times when they were younger and needed help. You could also share memories about a time when you needed help. Remember: Everyone needs help sometimes!
  • Remind children that if we all pitch in, it can help make some things easier. Ask everyone about their favorite ways to help. Point out where you’ve seen them helping in the past and let them know how much you appreciate their efforts.
  • If changes are needed, this can be a time to talk about ways to adjust roles to meet new or changing needs of the family member that needs care.
  • Finally, be sure to take time to celebrate your family team!
