Create a Homework Center

Get ready for back-to-school by setting up a personalized school supply center to store items such as pencils, pens, markers and scissors. This project is both creative and functional and provides a space that children can call their own.

An organized homework space can help children get started on — and finish — their work faster. Having pencils, scissors, crayons, markers and more neatly sorted and stored in one place eliminates the need to dig through backpacks and hunt around the house for supplies for 30 minutes. And even better than organizing the space is personalizing it with your own artwork.

Try this pencil holder idea or think of other creative ways to get organized for the school year. Ask your child to think about how Pinkalicious might set up a homework center. What would she build to organize her school supplies? How would she decorate her space? Would she use stamps, stickers, paint, glitter, collage, sculpture, or several of these in a mixed media project? So many options!

Materials

Directions

1

Wash and dry your container. You can use containers such as an empty plastic peanut butter jar or a tin can. Make sure there are no sharp edges.

2

Cover your work area with newspaper. Paint the outside of your container. Spray paint or acrylic paint works well. Let the paint dry.

3

Decorate your container. Paint designs or patterns directly on the container or paint on paper and then tape the paper to the jar.

4

Optional: Add more decorations. Turn 2D art into 3D art by gluing on pom poms, sequins, glitter, pipe cleaners, or any other crafty art supplies.

5

Fill the jars with your favorite school supplies!

If you have left over paint, paper and craft supplies, you can use them to make a few bookmarks for your homework center!
