Jun 27, 2018

Collect everyday objects to make exhibits!

Materials

Directions

1

Tell your child that together, you will be creating a museum exhibit of the things that begin with a certain letter. Explain that an exhibit is a collection of things that is shown for people to look at.

2

Encourage your child to choose a favorite letter. You may want to review the letters of the alphabet to help your child decide. Try singing the alphabet song, reading an alphabet book, or saying and writing the alphabet on a piece of paper.

3

After your child has picked a letter, help her create a sign for the exhibit by writing the letter on a piece of paper. Encourage her to decorate the sign with crayons or markers.

4

Now it’s time to collect objects to show at the exhibit! Practice saying the sound you’re your letter makes out loud and encourage your child to think of things around your home that begin with that letter. Say a few words that begin with the letter to help her hear the first letter sound. For example, for the letter A you might name: apple or apron; for the letter B: banana or book; or for C: corn or cup.

5

Gather the objects and arrange them in an area. Post the sign near the display and encourage other family members and friends to stop by the exhibit! Together, talk about the things you collected for the exhibit. Take turns labeling the different objects. Remind her that each of the objects begins with the same letter to help her recognize the letter sound. For example, “That is an apple. Apple begins with the letter A.”

6

Take a walk around the neighborhood with your child. Invite her to go on a letter hunt for objects that begin with a certain letter. Encourage her to look at both objects and signs. How many examples can she find? When you return home, help your child write a list of the things she found. How many can she remember?
