Daily encouragements help kids learn to support themselves when the going gets tough, as well as start the day off right! Your child can pull a card from their jar every morning or whenever she needs a boost.

Affirmations are positive encouragements that help you form beliefs about yourself and the world, such as “I am kind” and “I am going to have a good day.” You can make positive changes and overcome challenges when you believe in the positive phrases and speak to yourself with kindness. The historical figures from Xavier Riddle also teach kids that they can change the world through mantras, such as “Follow your dreams, no matter what.” These catchphrases act as affirmations to help kids realize their potential and focus on their abilities.

Materials

Directions

1

Print out the encouragement cards.

2

Have your child create her own encouragement card on the blank card provided by drawing herself. Talk to your child about encouraging phrases you use in your own house, and write it on her encouragement card. For example: I can do hard things. I am a team player.

3

Cut out the encouragement cards, and make sure that a parent helps with any cutting!

4

Decorate the outside of the encouragement jar by placing pieces of colored tissue on the jar and painting it over with glue.

5

Make a label for your jar using the paper and permanent marker. Glue it to the outside of your jar.

6

Fill the jar with the encouragement cards.

7

Every morning, or whenever your child needs a boost, pull an encouragement card from the jar! Read the affirmation and have her repeat it back to you. Talk about the historical figure, what their phrase means, and how she can carry that message with her throughout the day.
