Libraries open up the world for children — with books and more on every topic or culture your child would want to explore. Introduce your child to the library with these activities.

Directions

1

Learn about the library: Use make-believe library cards, book cards, and a date stamp to turn your child’s book collection into a library at home. Prepare your kids for a visit to the local library by role-playing how you would choose books, check out, and return library books.

2

Arrange a tour: Contact a librarian to make arrangements for a tour of your local library.

3

Explore the library: Visit the children’s section, locate the bathrooms and drinking fountains, etc. If possible, participate in a special library event, like story hour!

4

Get a card: If your child is old enough to get a library card, you can apply for it before or during your visit.
