Make a Bug Jar

Nov 28, 201815 min activity

Use a jar to make a temporary home for a backyard bug. Be sure to release the bug after you have observed it.

Materials

Directions

1

Gently place a few blades of grass, leaves, and a twig into your jar.

2

Replace the flat tin lid with your wax paper or fabric. Any porous material will do. Poke holes in the wax or fabric with a toothpick.

3

Have the children collect a bug (or have the birthday child collect the bug ahead of time). Be sure to find a bug that is not poisonous and doesn't bite. Gently place the bug inside and screw the lid onto the jar.

4

Observe throughout the party, and make sure to set the bug free at the end!
