Make a Chinese Rattle Drum

The Chinese Rattle Drum (also called the hand drum) originated in China during the Song Dynasty and became a popular children’s toy that is still used today. Use this fun craft activity to open up a discussion with your child about this Chinese instrument! Crafted simply from two paper plates and a wooden stick, we will affix bells onto the ends of string to make music!
Materials
Directions

Paint the outsides of two paper plates. We used red paint. Allow the paint to dry.

Tape the wooden stick to the inside of the plate making the handle a reasonable length for holding.

Next, tie 6 inch pieces of red string to the bells and then tape the ends of the string to the side of the inside of the first plate. Repeat steps for the other side.

Now staple the second paper plate to the first one with the curved side of both facing outward.

Decorate your plates with stickers or drawings that you glue on!

Place the stick of your drum in between your two hands and rub together to rotate the drum and make music! Or, twist your drum side to side and make music!
