Make a Galaxy in a Jar

Our solar system — which includes the sun, Earth and seven other planets — is part of the Milky Way galaxy. Galaxies are made up of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their systems. In certain locations, you can see the sparkling Milky Way — a faint band of light running through the night sky. Explore the wonders that make up our galaxy by recreating its beauty in a bottle.
Materials
Directions
Have your child add about 1/3 cup of water to the jar.
Then add a little tempera paint and stir. Start with about a teaspoon and add more if needed.

Add cotton balls and then glitter.

Keep adding layers of water, tempera paint, cotton balls, and glitter, pressing down the cotton balls with a spoon until you reach the top.

Screw on the lid to complete your galaxy jar! Shake it up and down and observe its calming beauty. How does it look similar to the night sky?
